World Environmental Day: Empowering change with Computer Aid

This week we have celebrated World Environmental Day, a day to encourage awareness and action for the protection of the environment. As we commemorate World Environmental Day here at Gravita, we are reflecting on addressing the environmental challenges we face and continue to look for ways to increase sustainability and play our part in creating a better world.

For over 15 years CBW, part of Gravita, has donated all IT equipment no longer used to Computer Aid International, a relationship that will continue with Gravita going forward. Computer Aid collect IT equipment, ready to be donated, for re-use projects in the UK and overseas to help bridge the digital divide. This includes donated computers, tablets, and mobile telephones, that are all data-wiped and professionally refurbished.

Computer Aid empower the developing world by bringing access, education, and the implementation of technology to over 14.5 million people. Building a world where everyone has equal access to technology through sustainable IT solutions with high-quality equipment and access to education in the developing world.

CBW, part of Gravita, have donated over two thirds of no longer used IT equipment, which has been sent to the charity’s partner organisation, Malawi University of Science and Technology.

The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) was developed with the aim of promoting the development, adaptation, transfer and application of science, technology, and innovation for macro- and micro- economic development in Malawi. MUST provides quality education, training, research and entrepreneurship, and outreach activities.

Beyond matching donated computers with organisations that need it across the world, Computer Aid also work on a range of innovative projects, assisting with digitalising schools, implementing solar labs, and connecting portable internet libraries to name a few.

Waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) such as computers and phones are one of the fastest growing waste streams in the UK, every year an estimated 2 million tonnes of WEEE items are discarded. By donating to Computer Aid, businesses reduce their e-waste, and Computer Aid takes full responsibility for equipment and ensures that 0% goes to landfill.
