Service - Tax disputes and investigations

Supporting companies and individuals with HMRC tax investigations, disclosures and tax disputes.

An HMRC enquiry, investigation or disclosure can be time-consuming and difficult to manage, particularly where the issues are complex or the potential financial impact is unclear. You may have received a nudge letter, need to make a voluntary disclosure, be facing questions around personal or corporate tax, PAYE or VAT, or already be in dispute with HMRC. This may include matters involving Code of Practice 8 (COP 8) or Code of Practice 9 (COP 9), which can carry significant financial and reputational consequences.

Gravita’s tax investigations team supports individuals, owner-managed businesses and larger companies, including those that already have an accountant but need specialist input. We take time to understand the background, establish the facts and deal with HMRC on your behalf. From enquiries and disclosures through to negotiations, appeals and Tax Tribunal proceedings where required, we manage the process while keeping you informed and explaining your options clearly.

The outfit I have in London has been good. Gravita has that big company depth. Relationships are important to me, and I have known people at the firm for years. When unexpected events happen, you really value having that strength of accountants behind you.

Why choose Gravita?

We put your mind at ease.

Tax investigations can create uncertainty for individuals and businesses. We make sure you understand what HMRC is asking, what it means for you and what happens next. By managing communications with HMRC and keeping you informed throughout, we help reduce the pressure on you and give you greater confidence in the process.

We manage risk from the outset.

The decisions made at the start of an investigation can affect how the case develops. We take time to establish the facts, identify the key areas of risk and determine the right approach before responding to HMRC. This helps protect your position, avoid unnecessary escalation and keep the investigation focused on the issues that matter.

We bring specialist experience to complex cases.

Our tax investigations team has extensive experience across HMRC enquiries, disclosures, fraud investigations, Alternative Dispute Resolution and Tax Tribunal proceedings. That breadth of experience allows us to adapt our approach as a case develops and bring in other Gravita specialists where additional tax, financial or technical input is required to support the case.

What happens when HMRC opens an enquiry or investigation?

An HMRC enquiry does not automatically mean something is wrong, but how you handle the early stages matters. Before responding, it is important to understand what HMRC is looking at and where any potential risks may sit.

Establish what the enquiry covers

Identify the tax, period and issues HMRC is looking at, together with any deadlines. Understanding the scope first will help you avoid giving an incomplete or unnecessary response.

Get the facts in order

Pull together the records and background relevant to HMRC’s questions. A clear picture of what has happened makes it easier to assess the position and decide how best to respond.

Get specialist support early

Bringing in a tax investigations specialist at the outset can help identify areas of risk and shape the approach to HMRC before the enquiry develops further.

Keep control of the process

HMRC correspondence needs to be handled carefully and consistently. We can manage communications, respond to information requests and challenge HMRC where appropriate, while keeping you informed throughout.
