Webinar recording: Preparing for Making Tax Digital – Insights from Gravita and HMRC

With the April 2026 deadline fast approaching, now is the time to get clear on what Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD ITSA) means for you. In our latest webinar, Gravita’s Director of Transformation, Russell Frayne, was joined by Lenny Barry from HMRC to unpack what’s changing, why it matters, and how you can prepare. For more information, view our MTD FAQ.

The headline? MTD for Income Tax is going ahead – no more delays. HMRC has confirmed the system is on track and ready to go. From April 2026, self-employed individuals and landlords with combined income over £50,000 will need to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates through HMRC-recognised software. Those earning between £30,000 and £50,000 will follow in April 2027, with others to be brought in later.

It’s important to note that these income thresholds are based on turnover, not profit. That means if your gross income across self-employment and property is over the threshold, even if your profits are modest, you’ll be in scope. Quarterly updates won’t mean quarterly tax payments, but they will require you to get comfortable with digital record keeping.

The good news? MTD can make your life easier in the long run – better visibility of your tax position, improved record accuracy, and less last-minute stress. But it takes preparation. HMRC is urging taxpayers to act now: check your income levels, speak to your accountant, and make sure the software you use is MTD-compliant. Not all platforms that work for VAT will be ready for income tax.

Gravita can help you find the right solution, whether that means doing it yourself with the right tools, doing it together with our support, or having us handle it all for you. Watch the full webinar below for a detailed walkthrough, practical tips and answers to common questions.
